Midtown Comics Avengers vs. X-Men Release Event
I had the chance to go down to Midtown Comics in Times Square on Tuesday for their Avengers vs. X-Men #1 Release Event. They had a deal that if you were one of the first 200 people in line you were able to get your early purchase of AVX #1 signed by artist Adam Kubert, and editors Axel Alonso, Tom Brevoort, and Nick Lowe. The actual signing part wasn’t until 9:00PM, but some people were waiting there as early as 8:00AM that morning. I wasn’t able to get there until 3:30PM, which was still a good time since I ending up being one of the first 30 people in line.
MTV Geek was also there covering the event, interviewing hardcore Marvel fans and asking which side they were rooting for. AVX is a pretty huge event in Marvel Comics, so it’s only right that MTV Geek would be there covering. The crowd was a diverse mix of casual comic book fans, young readers, hardcore fans, and even cosplayers. There were people dressed up as She-Hulk, Deadpool, and Nightcrawler, just to name a few.
Unfortunately, Midtown Comics first advertised this as a party. They eventually changed their details and it just became a signing. They did have free pizza but only a small percentage of the 200 fans that showed up got any. I didn’t mind so much. There was a McDonald’s right around the corner and I was really there for the signing part anyway. Midtown Comics offered several different editions of AVX #1 for early purchase including the regular edition and 2 variant editions valued at $3.99, an exclusive Skottie Young variant valued at $8, a John Romita, Jr. variant valued at $20, and a black & white variant valued at $200. I was able to get the regular edition and one of the $3.99 variants signed. In addition to that, Midtown Comics also gave out AVX Round 8 preview posters signed by Adam Kubert. Everything is pictured above.
Overall, I’d say waiting five and a half hours in line was definitely worth it, especially since I didn’t even know they would hand out free posters to get signed in addition to our comics. I’m so glad Midtown Comics set this event up. It was a shame that artist John Romita, Jr. couldn’t show up, he cancelled a few days earlier, but Midtown Comics says they will try and set up another signing with him in the near-future. If that’s the case The Final Five will definitely keep you posted. Until then, enjoy the pictures, and if you were one of the first 200 people in line at Midtown Comics on Tuesday… Congratulations.
